Kiwanis Day of Champions
In our continued effort to promote diversity, during Thursday’s lunch we will be conducting a “Pass the Hat” fundraiser to support the Kiwanis Day of Champions event.
This annual event on May 24th, 2018 highlights over 650 happy and exuberant special needs students surrounded by hundreds of supportive, cheering and equally happy community, military and student volunteers. The joy is palpable on this special day with music playing, mascots high-fiving, volunteers cheering and serving 1,500 lunches, and participants proudly wearing their medals and tee shirts as they rotate between 16 modified field stations.
For much of their lives, students with special needs remain on the sideline cheering for their non-disabled peers and siblings. In 2003, first Day of Champions to provide a day just for them! The Day of Champions is a very unique, non-competitive, highly-modified track and field event designed specifically for students with special needs/challenges. This free, ALL-volunteer event features stations such as “Big Ball, Frisbee Toss, Obstacle Course, Shuttle Run and so much more. All participants receive a free tee shirt, a medal, lunch and a book provided by South Sound Reading Foundation.
In 2017, over 650 participants representing 46 schools from 10 school districts experienced the joy of participating and being cheered for by hundreds—soldiers, cheerleaders, Key Club students, community volunteers and family members.
Please join others and HELP make May 24, 2018 a special day for these deserving students and to expand this event to other counties in WA State.
