South Napa Earthquake – Mission: RESPOND and RECOVER

Overview:

In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 24, 2014 a 6.0 magnitude earthquake rippled violently through the quiet hillsides, vineyards, homes and business of Napa Valley focusing most of its energy on the historic downtown and western portion of the City of Napa. Roads were ripped in half, sidewalks were buckled, water pipes were leaking, building structures were compromised, and debris from the damage was everywhere.  The Mission for Public Works was immediately clear – RESPOND and RECOVER.  This presentation will highlight Napa’s efforts to respond in the weeks following the quake, discuss the recovery effort with FEMA, and provide lessons learned from a community that lived through it.

Speaker Background:

Phil Brun is the Deputy Director of Public Works (Operations) for the City of Napa and is responsible for Water, Streets, Fleet, and Solid Waste/Recycling.  Phil has been with the City of Napa for 20 years.  Phil is a registered civil engineer in California with a Bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  He is very involved in the American Water Works Association serving as the Chair of the California-Nevada section in 2010 and was a Director on the AWWA Board from 2012 to 2015.
