Building

Communities of Belonging

APWA strives to be a place where everyone feels welcome, valued, and safe. When people feel they belong, they participate fully, contribute meaningfully, take risks, and lead. Our organization, our profession, and our communities need people who do all of these things. By acting intentionally, belonging becomes purposeful—not accidental.

In the coming year, members are invited to be intentional about reaching out to those who are struggling to find their place within the organization, elevating and celebrating the people they work with, and treating the people they serve with dignity and respect. All are encouraged to lean into the idea of Building Communities of Belonging.

The 2026 conference theme “Communities of Belonging” is based on the work of our keynote, Dr. Bertice Berry and is used with her permission.
